 Pavement engineering is a crossroads between geotechnical and transportation with sound base on construction materials. There are multiple applications of optimization algorithms in pavement engineering, emphasizing management for its socioeconomic implications back-calculation layer properties complexity. A detailed literature review shows that has been permanent concern engineering. However, only the last two decades, increase computational power allowed implementation metaheuristic techniques promising results research practice. requires powerful tools multi-objective problems such as minimizing costs maximizing state from network to project level constrained budgets. substantial amount focuses genetic (GA), but new developments include particle intelligence (PSO, ACO, ABC). The study must go beyond small-sized networks improve existing road infrastructure (pavement, bridges) based mechanistic reliability criteria.
