Application of phytoremediation for heavy metal contaminated sites in the South Pacific: strategies, current challenges and future prospects

چکیده
Effectively dealing with hazardous and recalcitrant pollutants such as heavy metals (HMs) has become a global challenge limited options available for reprieve. This is true Pacific Island Countries Territories (PICTs) which have witnessed significant economic transitions substantial increases waste depositions. Although several physico-chemical remediation techniques exist, the geographic limitations of PICTs render them impractical region. Phytoremediation, plant–based technology exploits hyperaccumulator plants to extract, accumulate and/or stabilize HMs, received interest sustainable non–intrusive option. Nonetheless, improving application efficiency phytoremediation programs not only requires better understanding fundamental mechanisms governing HM accumulation tolerance in plants, but also demands fast reliable spectroscopic in–situ analysis. review critically examines current practices its prospects treatment HM–contaminated sites PICTs. We traditional inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy/atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP–MS/AES) promise novel field portable X–ray fluorescence spectrometry (FP–XRF), atmospheric pressure discharge (APDP) lab on chip (LOC) studies.

Heavy Metal Accumulation in Plant Species Indigenous to a Contaminated Portuguese Site: Prospects for Phytoremediation
Phytoremediation is a promising alternative to conventional soil clean-up methods; however, up to date, there is still not enough information on plant species suitable for application in this field of science. Therefore, plant screening on contaminated sites can lead to the identification of further species of interest. In the present study, pedological and botanical characteristics of an indus...

15 صفحه اولProspects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) associations are integral, functioning parts of plant roots and are widely recognized as enhancing plant growth on severely disturbed sites, including those contaminated with heavy metals. They are reported to be present on the roots of plants growing on heavy metal contaminated soils and play an important role in metal tolerance and accumulation. Isolation of the in...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated land by trees--a review.
This paper reviews the potential for using trees for the phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated land. It considers the following aspects: metal tolerance in trees, heavy metal uptake by trees grown on contaminated substrates, heavy metal compartmentalisation within trees, phytoremediation using trees and the phytoremediation potential of willow (Salix spp.).
