چکیده

Abstract The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) utilized new space-based environmental monitoring (SBEM) data alongside traditional to adjust JTWC tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and structure estimates during production of the official 2019 Best Track dataset. Intensity from multiple platforms such as Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2), Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Ocean Salinity (SMOS) radiometers, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), along with objective Dvorak satellite consensus algorithms, not only aided poststorm best track (BT) process, but also provided robust that supported real-time analysis forecasting. This summary attempts communicate TC community extent which these affected BT data, how in provide examples influenced forecaster decision-making real time. paper makes no attempt validate accuracy wind speed methods (SAR, SMAP/SMOS, or AMSR2) does outline entirety process for determining intensity, it outline, briefly, impact datasets on final analysis. These methodologies are valuable sources an otherwise data-sparse area responsibility, many cases critical captured by alone, detailed further this summary.

The Dvorak Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation Technique

T HE DVORAK TECHNIQUE LEGACY. The Dvorak tropical cyclone (TC) intensity estimation technique has been the primary method of monitoring tropical systems for more than three decades. The technique has likely saved tens of thousands of lives in regions where over one billion people are directly affected by TCs (commonly called hurricanes, typhoons, or cyclones). The Dvorak technique’s practical a...

Initialization of Tropical Cyclone Structure for Operational Application

The long-term goal of this project is to improve the prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis, structure and intensity changes through improved representation of 3-dimensional TC structure at the initial time. The accurate prediction of TC genesis, structure and intensity changes is critical to Navy missions and civilian activities in coastal areas. Significant gains have been made in the TC...

Adapting the Knaff and Zehr wind-pressure relationship for operational use in Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres

The issue of the relationship between the central mean sealevel pressure (Pc) and maximum mean near-surface wind* (the wind-pressure relationship, hereafter WPR) in a tropical cyclone (TC) has been the subject of ongoing debate for many decades and a number of relationships have been developed during this period. This is demonstrated by the fact that the three Australian Tropical Cyclone Warnin...

Quantifying Environmental Control on Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change

Composite analysis is used to examine environmental and climatology and persistence characteristics of tropical cyclones (TCs) undergoing different intensity changes in the western North Pacific (WPAC) and North Atlantic (ATL) ocean basins. Using the cumulative distribution functions of 24-h intensity changes from the 2003–08 best-track data, four intensity change bins are defined: rapidly inte...
