Application of Biocompatible Noble Metal Film Materials to Medical Implants: TiNi Surface Modification

Recently, film materials based on the combination of noble metals have showed promising results for surface modification medical implants, allowing both to improve biocompatibility and acquire increased antibacterial effect. An important challenge here is combine developed coating morphology, which favorable biological response, with a high protective function, which, contrary, requires compact microstructure. In this work, we aimed solve problem respect TiNi implant material. We tested two types thin sublayers: Iridium (Ir’), formed by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), gold (Au), physical (PVD). Subsequently these sublayers were coated developed-columnar-iridium (Ir) MOCVD. Features microstructure, phase composition all studied using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The changes in characteristics martensitic transformation due MOCVD experiments also differential calorimetry (DSC). Ir’/TiNi, Au/TiNi, Ir/Ir’/TiNi, Ir/Au/TiNi samples was assessed cytoxicity testing (Man-1 cells) measuring nickel content extracts. application effectively reduces release nickel, previously shown Ir/TiNi samples. This prevents toxic Note that Ir’ sublayer better protects against release, while Au promotes cell proliferation.
