چکیده
TOPIC: Obstructive Lung Diseases TYPE: Original Investigations PURPOSE: Psychological symptoms of anxiety and depression are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Lack social support may be an additive burden to these elevated psychological symptoms. We examined the effect anxiety, depression, on risk severe acute exacerbations COPD. METHODS: analyzed baseline data from Veteran COPD who participated a 1-year observational study. Patients were aged 40 ≥ years post-bronchodilation forced FEV1/FVC (forced expiratory volume one second over vital capacity) less than 0.7 had experienced exacerbation preceding year. Depressive measured using Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD). Dyspnea was assessed by modified Medical Research Council scale Outcome Study Social Support Scale. Participants completed phone assessments every 2-weeks reporting exacerbations. used negative binomial regression model which we defined as hospitalizations. RESULTS: 410 mean age 69.6 years, FEV1= 44.9% predicted, 96% male. The prevalence (HAD-anxiety ≥8) 32%, depressive (HAD-depression 27%. 67(16%) participants 1 hospitalization. After adjusting for age, sex, severity comorbidity, both only related increased hospitalization (Table 1). In adjusted models examining support, living alone lower emotional CONCLUSIONS: 1. Approximately third this predominately male sample clinically significant or 2. low each independently twice likely at developing 3. Living associated 70% increase rate compared those others. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: symptoms, require closer medical follow-up monitoring, appropriate treatment plan reduce DISCLOSURES: No relevant relationships Catherine Battaglia, source=Web Response Jeffrey Edelman, Vincent Fan, John Fortney, Paul Hebert, Emily Locke, Tracy Simpson, Erik Swenson, Ranak Trivedi, Abebaw Yohannes,

BACKGROUND Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are oral antihyperglycemic medications that are selective agonists to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma and have been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects in the lung. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess whether exposure to TZDs is associated with a decreased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacer...
