Antioxidant Response in the Salt-Acclimated Red Beet (Beta vulgaris) Callus

Callus cultures initiated from red beet tubers were acclimated to 75 or 100 mM NaCl salinity by exposing them gradually increasing concentrations. The callus lines displayed growth rates comparable the control culture cultivated on NaCl-free medium. Several antioxidant system components analyzed assess role of defense in callus’s ability proliferate salt-supplemented media. It was found that proline and ascorbate concentrations increased salt-acclimated with respect line. On other hand, glutathione concentration unchanged all tested lines. Total activities enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (APX, 1.11.1.11), class III (POX, 1.11.1.7) cultures. enzymatic systems upregulated a coordinated manner during initial phases cycle when increase fresh mass occurs.
