Susceptibilities of oral and nasal isolates of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis to macrolides and PCR detection of resistance genes.
The susceptibility of viridans group streptococci to macrolides was determined. Thirteen isolates (17%) were resistant to erythromycin. Five strains carried an erm gene that was highly homologous to that in Tn917. Four strains had mefE genes that coded erythromycin efflux ability.
متن کاملIn silico assessment of virulence factors in strains of Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis isolated from patients with Infective Endocarditis.
PURPOSE Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis belong to the Mitis group, which are mostly commensals in the human oral cavity. Even though S. oralis and S. mitis are oral commensals, they can be opportunistic pathogens causing infective endocarditis. A recent taxonomic re-evaluation of the Mitis group has embedded the species Streptococcus tigurinus and Streptococcus dentisani into the s...
متن کاملAcidogenicity and acid tolerance of Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis isolated from plaque of healthy and incipient caries teeth
BACKGROUND Non-mutans low pH oral streptococci are postulated to contribute to caries etiology. OBJECTIVE This study was undertaken to investigate whether the acidogenicity and acid tolerance of clinical strains of Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis correlate with health or early-stage enamel caries. DESIGN S. oralis and S. mitis were isolated from plaque samples taken from the oc...
متن کاملExperimental bacterial endocarditis due to Streptococcus mitis.
It is important in order to advance the increasingly successful attack on subacute bacterial endocarditis to be able to produce the disease experimentally and to treat it with new and improved therapeutic regimens. Since endocarditis caused by Streptococcus mitis has not been consistently produced previously in the dog, a study was undertaken in which cardiovascular stress was created by the es...
متن کاملPopulation structure of Streptococcus oralis
Streptococcus oralis is a member of the normal human oral microbiota, capable of opportunistic pathogenicity; like related oral streptococci, it exhibits appreciable phenotypic and genetic variation. A multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for S. oralis was developed and the resultant data analysed to examine the population structure of the species. Analysis of 113 isolates, confirmed as bel...
