چکیده
Abstract The perennial ice-covered lakes of the Antarctic McMurdo Dry Valleys harbour oligotrophic microbial communities that are separated geographically from other aquatic systems. Their microbiomes include planktonic microbes as well lift-off mat emerge ice. We used ShortBRED protein family profiler to quantify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) metagenomes mats emerging ice and filtered water samples Lake Fryxell Bonney. overall proportion ARG hits was similar found in temperate-zone rural ponds with moderate human inputs. Specific ARGs showed distinct distributions for two vs sources. Metagenomic taxa phototrophs consisted mainly cyanobacteria or Betaproteobacteria, whereas column were protists. An enrichment culture Betaproteobacterium Rhodoferax antarcticus a sample an unusual mat-forming phenotype not previously reported this species. Its genome no associated Betaproteobacteria but had consistent minor Pseudomonas component. lake specific distinctive sources, levels those temperate bodies

Planktonic microbial community composition across steep physical/chemical gradients in permanently ice-covered Lake Bonney, Antarctica
Lake Bonney is a chemically stratified, permanently ice-covered Antarctic lake that is unusual because anomalous nutrient concentrations in the east lobe suggest that denitrification occurs in the deep suboxic waters of the west lobe but not the east lobe, resulting in high concentrations of nitrate and nitrite below the east lobe chemocline. Environmental factors that usually control denitrifi...
متن کاملOxygen budget of a perennially ice-covered Antarctic lake.
A bulk O2 budget for Lake Hoare, Antarctica, is presented. Five years of seasonal data show the lake to be persistently supersaturated with O2. Oxygen is carried into the lake in glacial meltstreams and is left behind when this water is removed as ice by ablation and sublimation. A diffusive loss of O2 from the lake through the summer moat is suggested. Measured values of the total O2 in the...
متن کاملSediment Melt-Migration Dynamics in Perennial Antarctic Lake Ice
We examined sediment melt-migration dynamics in the ice cover of Lake Fryxell, Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, using a combination of laboratory experiments, field observations, and modeling. The specific objectives were to determine the thermal conditions required for sediment melt and how sediment migration rates vary with meteorological forcings and ice microstructure. These ...
متن کاملMicroplankton dynamics in a perennially ice-covered Antarctic lake – Lake Hoare
1. Temporal and spatial variation in planktonic abundance, biomass and composition were determined in Lake Hoare (McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica) over two summer seasons (1996–97 and 1997–98). 2. Phototrophic nanoflagellates (PNAN) dominated planktonic biomass, with a mean monthly biomass ranging between 27.3 and 40.4 lg C L. The deep chlorophyll maximum was mainly composed of cryptophytes (>8...
متن کاملIsolation, characterization, and ecology of cold-active, chemolithotrophic, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria from perennially ice-covered Lake Fryxell, Antarctica.
Novel strains of obligately chemolithoautotrophic, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria have been isolated from various depths of Lake Fryxell, Antarctica. Physiological, morphological, and phylogenetic analyses showed these strains to be related to mesophilic Thiobacillus species, such as T. thioparus. However, the psychrotolerant Antarctic isolates showed an adaptation to cold temperatures and thus shou...
