Antibacterial Films Based on MOF Composites that Release Iodine Passively or Upon Triggering by Near?Infrared Light

Multidrug-resistant bacteria have become a global health problem for which new prophylactic strategies are now needed, including surface-coatings hospital spaces and medical equipment. This work reports the preparation functional validation of metal-organic framework (MOF) based composite triggered controlled release iodine, an antimicrobial element that does not generate resistance. It comprises beads iodophilic MOF UiO-66 containing encapsulated gold nanorods (AuNRs) coated with silica shell. Irradiation AuNRs near-infrared light (NIR) provokes photothermal effect resultant heat actively liberates iodine. After validating performance this composite, it is integrated into polymer development antibacterial films. assesses adsorption iodine these films, as well its passive long-term active light-triggered. Finally, validates activity films in vitro against gram-positive gram-negative bacteria. The findings will surely inform treatments.
