Anthropogenic food: an emerging threat to polar bears

چکیده

Abstract Supplemental food from anthropogenic sources is a source of conflict with humans for many wildlife species. Food-seeking behaviours by black bears Ursus americanus and brown arctos can lead to property damage, human injury mortality the offending bears. Such conflicts are well-known conservation management issue wherever people live in bear habitats. In contrast, use foods polar maritimus less common historically but growing across Arctic. Here we present six case studies that illustrate how negative food-related interactions between become either chronic or ephemeral unpredictable. Our examination suggests attractants an increasing problem, exacerbated climate change-driven sea-ice losses cause increased terrestrial habitats Growing populations visitation increase likelihood human–polar conflict. Efforts reduce conditioning include attractant management, proactive planning adequate resources northern communities improve safety. Permanent removal unsecured nutrition, conditioning, should begin immediately at local level as this will help mortality.

Anthropogenic pollutants – an insidious threat to animal health and productivity?

Humans have always polluted their environment and, to an extent, the associated adverse consequences have increased in parallel with the global population. However, in recent decades, entirely novel compounds have been created, for multiple purposes, and some of these have become ubiquitous, damaging pollutants, which interfere with fundamental physiological processes in all animal species, dis...

Anthropogenic pollutants: a threat to ecosystem sustainability?

Pollutants, including synthetic organic materials and heavy metals, are known to adversely affect physiological systems in all animal species studied to date. While many individual chemicals can perturb normal functions, the combined actions of multiple pollutants are of particular concern because they can exert effects even when each individual chemical is present at concentrations too low to ...

Scrub Typhus: An Emerging Threat

Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi (formerly Rickettsia) and is transmitted to humans by an arthropod vector of the Trombiculidae family (Leptotrombidium deliense and L. akamushi). It is the most common re-emerging Rickettsial infection in India and many other South East Asian countries. In fact, scrub typhus is confined geographically to the Asia Pacific region, a billion people ...
