Intra-atrial endothelial lesion resulting from transseptal puncture for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation
Thromboembolic events are known complications of left atrial ablation therapy. We describe a complication which may also lead to systemic thromboembolism that has not been reported so far: the formation of a moving structure attached to the fossa ovalis after an attempted transseptal puncture in a 66-year old patient with symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

In recent years, percutaneous procedures have been used increasingly to correct structural heart disease. Many of these procedures require transseptal puncture to access the left heart chambers, although complications such as cardiac tamponade and aortic perforation may occur. In certain situations, puncture of the atrial septum is required (for placement of a MitraClip device or closure of the...
متن کاملReduction of Iatrogenic Atrial Septal Defects with an Anterior and Inferior Transseptal Puncture Site when Operating the Cryoballoon Ablation Catheter.
The cryoballoon catheter ablates atrial fibrillation (AF) triggers in the left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs) via transseptal access. The typical transseptal puncture site is the fossa ovalis (FO) - the atrial septum's thinnest section. A potentially beneficial transseptal site, for the cryoballoon, is near the inferior limbus (IL). This study examines an alternative transseptal site nea...
