Ant nests differentially affect soil chemistry across elevational gradients

چکیده

Abstract Ants alter soil moisture and nutrient distributions during foraging nest construction. Here, we investigated how the effects of ants on vary with elevation. We compared moisture, carbon, nitrogen levels in samples taken both within nests nearby (control) two subterranean ant species. Using a paired design, sampled 17 sites along elevation gradients California mountain ranges ( Formica francoeuri San Jacinto mountains sibylla Sierra Nevada). observed an interaction between carbon composition each range. At lower elevations, had amounts than control soil, but at higher soil. However, our sampling method may only breach interior some environments. The did not show any elevational patterns either likely modulate properties differently across environmental gradients, testing this effect must account for variable architecture other climate landscape differences diverse habitats.

Flight performance and competitive displacement of hummingbirds across elevational gradients.

Hummingbirds, with their impressive flight ability and competitive aerial contests, make ideal candidates for applying a mechanistic approach to studying community structure. Because flight costs are influenced by abiotic factors that change systematically with altitude, elevational gradients provide natural experiments for hummingbird flight ecology. Prior attempts relied on wing disc loading ...

Elevational Gradients in Species Richness

The abiotic and biotic gradients on mountains have enormous potential to improve our understanding of species distributions, species richness patterns and conservation. Here we describe how abiotic factors change with elevation, how flora and fauna respond to these changes and how elevational species richness patterns have been studied to uncover drivers of biodiversity. There are four main tre...

Elevational gradients in ant species richness: area, geometry, and Rapoport’s rule

Studying the distributions of plants and animals along environmental gradients can illuminate the factors governing and maintaining species diversity. There are two general predictions of how species richness and elevation are related: either species richness decreases monotonically with increasing elevation or richness peaks at mid-elevations. Several processes might contribute to this pattern...

Patterns of ant species richness along elevational gradients in an arid ecosystem

Aim In this study, we examine patterns of local and regional ant species richness along three elevational gradients in an arid ecosystem. In addition, we test the hypothesis that changes in ant species richness with elevation are related to elevation-dependent changes in climate and available area. Location Spring Mountains, Nevada, U.S.A. Methods We used pitfall traps placed at each 100-m elev...

Elevational sensitivity in an Asian ‘hotspot’: moth diversity across elevational gradients in tropical, sub-tropical and sub-alpine China

South-western China is widely acknowledged as a biodiversity 'hotspot': there are high levels of diversity and endemism, and many environments are under significant anthropogenic threats not least climate warming. Here, we explore diversity and compare response patterns of moth assemblages among three elevational gradients established within different climatic bioregions - tropical rain forest,...
