Anisotropic spin Hall and spin Nernst effects in bismuth semimetal

چکیده
Bismuth is an archetypal semimetal with gigantic spin-orbit coupling and it has been a major source material for the discovery of seminal phenomena in solid state physics more than century. In recent years, spin current transports bismuth have also attracted considerable attention. this paper, we theoretically study both Hall effect (SHE) Nernst (SNE) bismuth, based on relativistic band structure calculations. First, find that there are three independent tensor elements conductivity (SHC) (SNC), namely, $Z_{yx}^z$, $Z_{xz}^y$, $Z_{zy}^x$. We calculate all as function Fermi energy. Second, SHC large, being $\sim$1000 ($\hbar$/e)(S/cm) comparable to platinum. Furthermore, because its low electrical conductivity, corresponding angles gigantic, $\sim$20%. Third, calculated SNC pronounced, [$\sim$0.13 ($\hbar$/e)(A/m-K)] gold, although they several times smaller platinum $\beta$-Ta. Finally, contrast Pt Au where $Z_{yx}^z = Z_{xz}^y Z_{zy}^x$, SHE SNE strongly anisotropic, i.e., $Z_{xz}^y$ $Z_{zy}^x$ differ significantly. Consequently, voltages due inverse from different could cancel each other thus result small angle if polycrystalline samples used, which may explain why measured ranging nearly 0 25% reported. hope these interesting findings would stimulate further experiments using highly oriented single crystal specimens.

Anisotropic spin Hall effect from first principles.
We report on first principles calculations of the anisotropy of the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (SHC) in nonmagnetic hcp metals and in antiferromagnetic Cr. For most of the metals of this study we find large anisotropies. We derive the general relation between the SHC vector and the direction of spin polarization and discuss its consequences for hcp metals. Especially, it is predicted that...

We predict, theoretically, the existence of the anomalous Hall effect when a tunneling current flows through a tunnel junction in which only one of the electrodes is magnetic. The interfacial spin-orbit coupling present in the barrier region induces a spin-dependent momentum filtering in the directions perpendicular to the tunneling current, resulting in a skew tunneling even in the absence of ...
متن کاملTheory of Spin Hall Effects in Semiconductors
Spin Hall effects are a collection of phenomena, resulting from spin-orbit coupling, in which an electrical current flowing through a sample can lead to spin transport in a perpendicular direction and spin accumulation at lateral boundaries. These effects, which do not require an applied magnetic field, can originate in a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit coupling mechanisms and dep...

Nonlocal spin transport in nanostructured devices with ferromagnetic injector (F1) and detector (F2) electrodes connected to a normal conductor (N) is studied. We reveal how the spin transport depends on interface resistance, electrode resistance, spin polarization and spin diffusion length, and obtain the conditions for efficient spin injection, spin accumulation and spin current in the device...
