Wave Velocity Dispersion and Attenuation in Media Exhibiting Internal Oscillations

Modeling the propagation of acoustic or fully elastic (i.e. seismic) waves is an important tool for interpreting, understanding and predicting real-world measurements in various industrial disciplines. In this context, modeling can be anything from three-dimensional full waveform modeling using numerical techniques (e.g. finite difference method, finite element method, spectral method; Kelly & ...

Seismic Wave Attenuation in Fluid-saturated Porous Media

Contrary to the traditional view, seismic attenuation in Biot's theory of uid-saturated porous media is due to viscous damping of local (not global) pore-uid motion. Since substantial inhomogeneities in uid permeability of porous geological materials are to be expected, the regions of highest local permeability contribute most to the wave energy dissipation while those of lowest permeability do...

Causality Analysis of Frequency Dependent Wave Attenuation

The work is inspired by thermo-and photoacoustic imaging, where recent efforts are devoted to take into account attenuation and varying wave speed parameters. In this paper we derive and analyze causal equations describing propagation of attenuated pressure waves. We also review standard models, like frequency power laws, and the thermo-viscous equation and show that they lack causality in the ...

: metadiscourse in introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics research articles: exploring variation in frequency and type

abstract in written mode of language, metadiscourse markers are used commonly to help writers in general and academic writers in particular to produce coherent and professional texts. the purpose of the present study was to compare introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics articles regarding their use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers based on the model pro...

Patterns of phase-dependent spiral wave attenuation in excitable media.

We show that introducing periodic planar fronts with long excitation duration can lead to spiral attenuation. The attenuation occurs periodically over cycles of several planar fronts, forming a variety of complex spatiotemporal patterns. We find that these attenuation patterns occur only at specific phases of the descending fronts relative to the rotational phase of the spiral. These patterns f...
