Ancient alluvial plains at Oxia Planum, Mars

چکیده
The geologic origin of the ancient, phyllosilicate-bearing bedrock at Oxia Planum, Mars, ExoMars rover landing site, is unknown. phyllosilicates record ancient aqueous processes, but processes that formed host remain elusive. Here, we use high-resolution orbital and topographic datasets from HiRISE, CaSSIS CTX instruments to investigate characterize fluvial sinuous ridges (FSRs), found across Planum region. FSRs form segments up 70 km long, are 20-600 m wide, 9 in height, with sub-horizontal layering common ridge margins. Some comprise multi-story systems; many embedded within bedrock. We interpret as deposits episodically active, alluvial river systems (channel-belt overbank deposits). Thus, least some was by rivers, active wider region, though do not exclude other contributing its formation well. presence floodplains increases chances detecting signs life. Future exploration can verify interpretation provides an opportunity oldest Solar System.

In situ evidence for an ancient aqueous environment at Meridiani Planum, Mars.
Sedimentary rocks at Eagle crater in Meridiani Planum are composed of fine-grained siliciclastic materials derived from weathering of basaltic rocks, sulfate minerals (including magnesium sulfate and jarosite) that constitute several tens of percent of the rock by weight, and hematite. Cross-stratification observed in rock outcrops indicates eolian and aqueous transport. Diagenetic features inc...

The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has investigated the landing site in Eagle crater and the nearby plains within Meridiani Planum. The soils consist of fine-grained basaltic sand and a surface lag of hematite-rich spherules, spherule fragments, and other granules. Wind ripples are common. Underlying the thin soil layer, and exposed within small impact craters and troughs, are flat-lying se...
متن کاملLarge alluvial fans on Mars
[1] Several dozen distinct alluvial fans, 10 to 40 km long downslope, have been observed in highlands craters. Within a search region between 0 and 30 S, alluvial fan-containing craters were found only between 18 and 29 S, and they all occur at around ±1 km of the MOLA-defined Martian datum. Within the study area they are not randomly distributed but instead form three distinct clusters. Fans t...
متن کاملPhyllosilicates and sulfates at Endeavour Crater, Meridiani Planum, Mars
[1] Phyllosilicates have been identified on the Martian surface from orbit, and are hypothesized to have formed under wet, non-acidic conditions early in the planet’s history. Exposures of these minerals have not yet been examined by a landed mission. Using Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter data, we report the detection of phyllosilicatebearing outcrops that may be accessible by the Mars Exploration ...
متن کاملAncient aqueous environments at Endeavour crater, Mars.
Opportunity has investigated in detail rocks on the rim of the Noachian age Endeavour crater, where orbital spectral reflectance signatures indicate the presence of Fe(+3)-rich smectites. The signatures are associated with fine-grained, layered rocks containing spherules of diagenetic or impact origin. The layered rocks are overlain by breccias, and both units are cut by calcium sulfate veins p...
