Anatomical Features in Lower-Lip Depressor Muscles for Optimization of Myectomies in Marginal Mandibular Nerve Palsy

نویسندگان

چکیده

Introduction: Myectomies of the lower-lip depressor muscles, with aim to improve facial balance in unilateral paralysis, have unexplained high recurrence rates. A potential explanation is that these recurrences are due inadequate resection through muscle width, leaving lateral fibers intact. Aim: Revisit anatomy muscles and suggest an optimization surgical technique. Perform a literature review identify rates technique procedure. Materials Methods: Ten fresh hemifaces were dissected. The following measurements labii inferioris anguli oris made: widths distance from mandibular midline borders intraoral canine border oris. was performed. Results: width 20 ± 4 mm 14 3 mm. 32 54 for revealed mean rate 21%. Discussion: myectomies extend laterally. To ensure inclusion whole decrease procedure, presented this study should be kept mind during surgery.

Depressor labii inferioris resection: an effective treatment for marginal mandibular nerve paralysis.

In patients who show their lower teeth during smiling and facial animation, paralysis of the marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) causes a noticeable asymmetry of the lower lip due to the absence of depressor function. This paper presents a balancing technique for this lower lip asymmetry that involves resection of the depressor labii inferioris (DLI) on the nonparalysed side. The anatomy of the mus...

Variant Anterior Digastric Muscle Transfer for Marginal Mandibular Branch of Facial Nerve Palsy

SUMMARY Marginal mandibular branch of facial nerve (MMBFN) palsy is a common consequence of head and neck surgeries. MMBFN palsy results in paralysis of muscles which depress the inferior lip. Current management of MMBFN palsy involves ruination of normal neuromuscular anatomy and physiology to restore symmetry to the mouth. The article outlines the possibility to transfer variant anterior diga...

Selective marginal mandibular neurectomy for treatment of the marginal mandibular lip deformity in patients with chronic unilateral facial palsies.

BACKGROUND For unilateral facial palsies, reanimation techniques such as cross-facial nerve grafting with free muscle transfer have been very successful at improving symmetrical lip elevation when smiling. However, these procedures do not address the residual asymmetry with respect to lip depression resulting from an uncorrected marginal mandibular nerve palsy. Techniques that do address this r...

Platysma Motor Nerve Transfer for Restoring Marginal Mandibular Nerve Function

BACKGROUND Injuries of the marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) of the facial nerve result in paralysis of the lower lip muscle depressors and an asymmetrical smile. Nerve reconstruction, when possible, is the method of choice; however, in cases of long nerve gaps or delayed nerve reconstruction, conventional nerve repairs may be difficult to perform or may provide suboptimal outcomes. Herein, we in...

Anatomical localisation of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve.

The marginal mandibular nerve was studied post mortem in 50 human subjects. The nerve was found to be presented by one branch (32%), two branches (40%) and three branches (28%). The relationship of the nerve to the lower border of the mandible was variable: it was either totally above the lower border of the mandible (28%), below the mandible (44%) or in 28% of cases lying above and below it. T...
