Analysis of crack front loading to improve reliability of fracture toughness calculations based on miniaturized CT specimens

This paper addresses the narrow applicable fracture toughness range of master curve method (ASTM-E1921) by expanding scaling process to include effect constraint loss in miniaturized specimens. To facilitate acquisition and scalability reliable data from one specimen size another apply Master-Curve with confidence when using small specimens, difference structure crack tip stress field between large specimens has be well understood modeled. In this study, stresses two sizes (1T 0.18T compact tension specimens) were calculated 3D finite element simulations run over a loadings (or equivalently for levels) at different temperatures lower part ductile brittle transition structural steel. The scaling, based on local approach fracture, is compared pure statistical correction front length recommended ASTM standard E1921. We show that already becomes significant low KJc values. Consequently, we propose simple “modified factor”, kM, ratio critical area/volume, accounting loss. Applying factor, geometries yields very good correlation simulated scaled/calculated intensities.
