Anaerobic Digestion of Cereal Rye Cover Crop

The rapid growth of cover crop planting area in the U.S. helps with erosion control, soil health, control greenhouse gases, and also provides abundant biomass for production bioenergy bioproducts. Given crops’ compositional heterogeneity variability, a tolerate platform technology such as anaerobic digestion (AD) is preferred but has not been widely used biorefining. This study evaluated biogas methane yields from six cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) crops grown Midwest, using both bench- pilot-scale digesters. effects two critical factors, total solids (TS) content ensiling, on digester performance were investigated. Methane 174.79–225.23 L/kg-VS obtained bench-scale tests mono feedstock. test no pH adjustment showed slightly higher yield. Ensiling increased yield by 23.08% at 6% TS, disturbed AD 8% failed 10% 15% TS. Findings this would help farmers biorefining industry to determine baseline revenue develop strategies process optimization.
