An updated suprageneric classification of planktic foraminifera after growing evidence of multiple benthic-planktic transitions

چکیده

Planktic foraminifera have traditionally been classified within a single order: Globigerinida. However, recent phylogenetic studies, both molecular and stratophenetic, are evidencing the polyphyletic origin of planktic from several benthic ancestors. At least four independent events benthic-planktic transition identified. One them occurred after Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary mass extinction, originating first Cenozoic globigerinids. Another three in Mesozoic, groups (globotruncanids, heterohelicids guembelitriids) not related phylogenetically to each other or current These findings make it necessary carry out an exhaustive review their suprageneric systematics, mainly at order level. Here we propose new, more natural classification, grouping into orders: Globigerinida, Heterohelicida, Globotruncanida n. ord., Guembelitriida ord. To better reflect diversity phylogeny foraminifera, also defined two new superfamilies: Abathomphaloidea superfam. Parvularugoglobigerinoidea superfam., one family: Parvularuglobigerinidae fam.

Surviving mass extinction by bridging the benthic/planktic divide.

Evolution of planktic organisms from benthic ancestors is commonly thought to represent unidirectional expansion into new ecological domains, possibly only once per clade. For foraminifera, this evolutionary expansion occurred in the Early-Middle Jurassic, and all living and extinct planktic foraminifera have been placed within 1 clade, the Suborder Globigerinina. The subsequent radiation of pl...

Dates on Planktic Foraminifera from a Gulf of Mexico Sediment Core: an Assessment of Stratigraphic Continuity

A series of recent papers has called for multiple radiocarbon dates on planktic foraminifera to assess stratigraphic continuity in deep-sea sediment cores. This recommendation comes from observations of anomalous 14C dates in planktic foraminifera from the same stratigraphic level. Potential reasons include bioturbation, downslope transport, secondary calcification, carbonate dissolution, and d...

Link between light-triggered Mg-banding and chamber formation in the planktic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina dutertrei

The relationship between seawater temperature and the average Mg/Ca ratios in planktic foraminifera is well established, providing an essential tool for reconstructing past ocean temperatures. However, many species display alternating high and low Mg-bands within their shell walls that cannot be explained by temperature alone. Recent experiments demonstrate that intrashell Mg variability in Orb...
