An Overview of Self-piercing Riveting Process with Focus on Joint Failures, Corrosion Issues and Optimisation Techniques

Abstract Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is a cold forming technique used to fasten together two or more sheets of materials with rivet without the need predrill hole. The application SPR in automotive sector has become increasingly popular mainly due growing use lightweight transportation applications. However, joining these advanced light remains challenge as often lack good combination high strength and ductility resist large plastic deformation induced by process. In this paper, joints their corresponding failure mechanisms are discussed, aiming provide foundation for future improvement joint quality. This paper divided into three major sections: 1) failures focusing on defects originated from process modes under different mechanical loading conditions, 2) corrosion issues, 3) optimisation via parameters techniques.
