An interplay of excluded-volume and polymer–(co)solvent attractive interactions regulates polymer collapse in mixed solvents

چکیده
Cosolvent effects on the coil–globule transitions in aqueous polymer solutions are not well understood, especially case of amphiphilic cosolvents that preferentially adsorb and lead to both swelling collapse. Although a predominant focus literature has been placed role polymer–cosolvent attractive interactions, our recent work shown excluded-volume interactions (repulsive interactions) can drive preferential adsorption cosolvent collapse via surfactant-like mechanism. Here, we further study polymer–(co)solvent two kinds solutions, namely, good solvent (water)–good (alcohol) (GSGC) poor solvent–good (PSGC) which exhibit non-monotonic change radius gyration with addition cosolvent. Interestingly, at low concentrations, energetic oppose GSGC contrarily support PSGC indicating importance underlying chemistry. Even though alcohol molecules adsorbed polymer, trends concentrations dominated by polymer–water cases. Therefore, either reinforce or compensate mechanism, it is this interplay drives coil-to-globule solutions. These results have implications for rationalizing cononsolvency real systems such as polyacrylamides where understanding microscopic driving forces still debatable.

Excluded Volume Effects and Stretched Polymer Chains
The renormalized elasticity Jheory for jsolated flexible polymers developed recently by de Gennes is extended to the case of strong elongation ( Z / R F >> 1,Z is the average end-to-end length in response to a uniform tension and R F is the excluded volume Flory radius !fa free coil). I t is shown that, in this regime, the elastic restoring force f is nonlinear in the distortion and varies as Z...
متن کاملParallel excluded volume tempering for polymer melts.
We have developed a technique to accelerate the acquisition of effectively uncorrelated configurations for off-lattice models of dense polymer melts that makes use of both parallel tempering and large-scale Monte Carlo moves. The method is based upon simulating a set of systems in parallel, each of which has a slightly different repulsive core potential, such that a thermodynamic path from full...
متن کاملCollapse of a polymer chain in poor solvents
2014 The behavior of a single, flexible polymer chain near the Flory temperature 0398 is analysed in analogy with a magnetic phase transition. The transition to a collapsed state is related to a tricritical point for the magnetic problem. A solute polymer chain expands in a good solvent, and collapses in a poor solvent [1]. By suitable changes in temperature, or in solvent composition, it is po...
متن کاملContributions of short-range and excluded-volume interactions to unperturbed polymer chain dimensions.
A Monte Carlo study is made of the mean-square radius of gyration for the freely rotating chain with such fictitious excluded-volume interactions that the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potentials at the Theta temperature act only between the fourth-through (3+Delta)th-neighbor beads (Delta > or = 1) along the chain. The behavior of the asymptotic value (/n)infinity of the ratio /n as a functi...
متن کاملEffect of excluded volume interactions on the interfacial properties of colloid-polymer mixtures.
We report a numerical study of equilibrium phase diagrams and interfacial properties of bulk and confined colloid-polymer mixtures using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Colloidal particles are treated as hard spheres, while the polymer chains are described as soft repulsive spheres. The polymer-polymer, colloid-polymer, and wall-polymer interactions are described by density-dependent p...
