An innovative in-situ DRAINage system for advanced groundwater reactive TREATment (in-DRAIN-TREAT)

The removal of groundwater contamination is a complex process due to the hydro-geochemical characteristics specific site, related maintenance and possible presence several types pollutants, both organic inorganic. In recent decades, there has been an increasing drive towards more sustainable treatment for contaminated as opposed intensive treatments, i.e. with high requirements onsite infrastructure, energy resource use. this study, new remediation technology proposed, combining use advanced drainage systems adsorption processes, termed In-situ reactive DRAINage system TREATment (In-DRAIN-TREAT). By taking advantage natural gradient, In-DRAIN-TREAT collects via treats polluted water directly into active cell located downstream, avoiding external inputs. Preliminary results indicate applicability efficiency when compared permeable barrier (PRB). applied remediate theoretical aquifer low permeability, by 13 m wide hexavalent chromium (CrVI) plume. This achieved in less than year, drain DN500, 32 long, 30 m3 filled activated carbon no consumption. A comparison barriers also shows preliminary 63% volume reduction, 10% decrease costs.
