An Evaluation of Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence as a Tool for Forensic Discrimination of Single Polyester Fibers

چکیده
Total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry was applied to a forensic discrimination of single polyester fibers. In non-destructive direct measurement 5 mm long fibers used for references, trace metallic elements such as Ti, Sb, Ge, Mn, and Co, found in additives catalyst residues, were detected using benchtop TXRF spectrometer. The individual elemental compositions the identified, correlations between manufacturers established principal component analysis (PCA). Black sampled from car trunk mats also analyzed. Several contain both Sb that characterize different polymerization catalysts; this indicates composed recycled materials. SR-μXRF spectra showed similar patterns fiber samples

Synchrotron radiation-induced total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis
Synchrotron radiation-induced total reflection X-ray fluorescence (SR-TXRF) analysis is a high sensitive analytical technique that offers limits of detection in the femtogram range for most elements. Besides the analytical aspect, SR-TXRF is mainly used in combination with angle-dependent measurements and/or X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to gain additional informatio...
متن کاملForensic applications of X-ray fluorescence microscopy
The development of highly efficient X-ray optics has allowed the development of bench-top XRF systems which have high intensity X-ray beams with diameters ranging from 10 micrometres through to a few millimetres. Coupled with integrated high magnification optical cameras, these systems are ideally suited to the needs of the forensic scientist. A microscopic particle from a crime scene can be an...

The use of a portable total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for field investigation
A newly developed, portable total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometer was tested during a field campaign on Chilean lakes and a German river in January 2002. The field measurements were compared with laboratory measurements carried out on a stationary instrument in the German laboratory. For method validation certified reference material (NIST SRM 1640 Trace elements in natural wa...
متن کاملTotal Reflection X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry for Characterization of Nuclear Materials
Total reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) is a comparatively new technique of material characterization and trace element analysis. It is an advanced variant of Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and is based on the principle of total reflection of X-rays when these radiations fall on a flat smooth surface at a grazing angle less than the critical angle of the sample support. The cri...
