An emerging populist welfare paradigm? How populist radical right‐wing parties are reshaping the welfare state

Abstract Populist radical right‐wing parties (PRRPs) in Western Europe have almost without exception shifted their position on distributive issues, abandoning earlier support for a minimal welfare state favor of higher social spending. Recent studies suggest that PRRPs' preferences go beyond the clash between simply expanding or retrenching welfare; instead, they defend specific focuses consumption policies “deserving.” Drawing this literature and paradigm literature, paper suggests PRRPs are not only chauvinist but promote what we call “dualistic” state: protectionism “deserving” neoliberal “undeserving.” To unpack attitude verify influence reforms, study two cases which PRRP cooperated with governing parties: Denmark (2009–2011) Austria (2017–2019). The confirms pursued coherent dual approach to distribution. Policy negotiations show successfully pursue austerity workfare measures targeting “undeserving,“ while preserving This thus contributes research attitudes and, more broadly, recent transformations Europe.
