An Assessment of the Antarctic Sea Ice Mass Budget Simulation in CMIP6 Historical Experiment

The sea ice formation and dissipation processes are complicated involve many factors mechanisms, from the basal growth/melting, frazil formation, snow to dynamic process, etc. contribution of different extent among models over Antarctic region has not been systematically evaluated. In this study, we evaluate quantify uncertainties contributors Sea mass budget 15 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). Results show that simulated total is primarily adjusted by growth/melting terms, term snow-ice term, whereas top melting lateral process evaporation play secondary roles. addition, while recent studies indicated Arctic formation/dissipation strong coherency CMIP models, our results revealed a significant model diversity region, indicating still considerable in these state-of-the-art climate models. largest appear whose spread same order magnitude as multi-model mean. some large positive bias terms may neutralize negative basal/top resulting similar value area compared with other yet an inaccurate physical process. highlight importance further improving dynamical parameterization
