An approach to weld dissimilar polycarbonate and high-density polyethylene by friction stir spot welding

Abstract The friction stir spot welding of polymeric materials has been examined extensively; conversely, only a few researchers have addressed the dissimilar polymers. In this study, possibility polycarbonate to high-density polyethylene is examined, which not previously investigated. influence parameters, namely, tool rotational speed and dwell time, was investigated experimentally, whereas plunging depth, rate, geometry were kept constant during all tests. induced temperature weld lap shear force recorded analyzed. Both are welded successfully by welding. At 2300 rpm 40 s time when sheet on top, maximum 0.37 kN obtained. findings demonstrated that an effective might be attained at moderate frictional heating slightly below melting T m glass transition g both materials. very low temperatures, poor quality When temperatures extensively increased, results deteriorated exhibit weak joint values because presence cavities pores in junction.
