Amplifying subtropical hydrological transition over China in early summer tied to weakened mid-latitude synoptic disturbances

چکیده

Abstract The rainy season over southern China (SC) begins with the onset of South Sea monsoon around mid-May. We demonstrate here that SC precipitation exhibits a notable drying (wetting) trend prior to (after) onset, leading more abrupt thus amplified hydrological transition in early summer. contrasting trends are largely driven by recent decline mid-latitude synoptic eddy activity. Weakened disturbances suppress frontal activities before facilitating trend, and enhance spatial stationarity monsoonal front after wetting trend. CMIP6 models general fail capture between two periods. In where both activity well captured, amplification is projected continue into late 21 st century. Our results highlight footprints hemispheric-scale climate change regional hydroclimate obvious challenges faced capturing such footprints.

On the Development of Synoptic-scale Disturbances over the Subtropical Oceans

Disturbances with scales of a few thousand kilometers are commonly observed in the troposphere over the subtropical oceans. Synoptic experience seems to indicate that many of these large-scale disturbances are driven by latent heat released in organized convection. To explore this possibility, a series of numerical experiments were conducted with a simple, two-layer, quasi-geostrophic model. Th...

Early Summer Rains and Their Mid-Summer Cessation Over the Caribbean: Dynamics, Predictability, and Applications

of a dissertation at the University of Miami. Dissertation supervised by Professor Brian Mapes. No. of pages in text. Model results for the ionospheric lower transition height over mid-latitude

Theoretical calculations of the ionospheric lower transition height (LTH), a level of equal O and molecular ion densities, were performed and compared with empirical models by Zhang et al. (1996). This paper represents a substantial extension of the prior work by including the AE-C data of ion composition analysis and by detailed quantitative studies of the LTH simulation, and by creating a new...

Interactions between Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillations and Synoptic-Scale Disturbances over the Western North Pacific. Part I: Energetics Diagnosis*

The role of scale interactions in the maintenance of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) during the extreme phases of the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) is examined through the construction of a new eddy energetics diagnostic tool that separates the effects of ISO and a low-frequency background state (LFBS; with periods longer than 90 days). The LFBS always contributes positively toward the EKE in the b...

Synoptic scale disturbances of the Indian summer monsoon as simulated in a high resolution climate model

The Hamburg atmospheric general circulation model ECHAM3 at T106 resolution (1.125' lat.Aon.) has considerable skill in reproducing the observed seasonal reversal of mean sea level pressure, the location of the summer heat low as well as the position of the monsoon trough over the Indian subcontinent. The present-day climate and its seasonal cycle are realistically simulated by the model over t...
