Alternative route to charge density wave formation in multiband systems.
Charge and spin density waves, periodic modulations of the electron, and magnetization densities, respectively, are among the most abundant and nontrivial low-temperature ordered phases in condensed matter. The ordering direction is widely believed to result from the Fermi surface topology. However, several recent studies indicate that this common view needs to be supplemented. Here, we show ho...
متن کاملSuperconductivity and charge density wave formation in TlxV6S8
We report on specific heat and resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure on the quasi-one dimensional metal TlxV6S8. We studied the interplay between the low temperature superconducting (SC) ground state and a high temperature charge density wave (CDW) instability. We observed a clear dependency of the physical properties of TlxV6S8 on the Tl concentration x. The CDW anomaly is presen...
متن کاملIndication of charge-density-wave formation in Bi(111).
Photoemission spectroscopy of Bi(111) reveals a small hexagonal two-dimensional Fermi surface (FS) associated with an electron band centered in the surface Brillouin zone. Along the hexagon the Fermi momentum k(F) ranges from 0.053 to 0.061 A(-1). Temperature dependent valence band spectra show an anisotropic energy gap Delta near the Fermi level. We find a transition temperature of about 75 K....
متن کاملInterplay of charge density wave and multiband superconductivity in 2H-PdxTaSe2.
2H-TaSe2 has been one of unique transition metal dichalcogenides exhibiting several phase transitions due to a delicate balance among competing electronic ground states. An unusual metallic state at high-T is sequentially followed by an incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) state at ≈122 K and a commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) state at ≈90 K, and superconductivity at TC ~ 0.14 K. Up...
متن کاملAtomistic picture of charge density wave formation at surfaces.
We used ultrafast electron diffraction and density-functional theory calculations to gain insight into the charge density wave (CDW) formation on In/Si(111). Weak excitation by a femtosecond-laser pulse results in the melting of the CDW. The immediate freezing is hindered by a barrier for the motion of atoms during the phase transition: The melted CDW constitutes a long-lived, supercooled phase...
