Alternative carbon dioxide utilization in dimethyl carbonate synthesis and comparison with current technologies

Abstract Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has recently gained popularity due to its environmentally friendly status and multiple applications in which it is able replace more toxic chemicals. Among several commercial synthesis production routes, the ethylene (EC) transesterification shines as a CO2 consuming process. However, other factors such high emitting of EC precursors hinder environmental capabilities. Methanol oxycarbonylation mature DMC non-CO2 route with potential indirectly utilize greenhouse gas throughout intermediates. In this work, we propose superstructure using methanol aim both (syngas) stages. Results show that integration syngas process vastly decreases cost emission respect unintegrated case. addition Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reactor further down minimum 1.019. kg CO2-eq/kg DMC, resulting 54 % decrease indicator compared direct utilization route. comparison blends gasoline manages reduce GWP fuel mix 16 %.
