Alpine subduction zone metamorphism in the Palaeozoic successions of the Monti Romani (Northern Apennines, Italy)

The hinterland of the Cenozoic Northern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt exposes metamorphic roots chain, vestiges subduction-related tectono-metamorphic evolution that led to buildup Alpine orogeny in Mediterranean region. Like other peri-Mediterranean belts, Palaeozoic continental basement is still poorly constrained, hampering full understanding their orogenic evolution. We report first comprehensive study low-grade metasedimentary (metapsammite/metapelite) succession Monti Romani Complex (MRC) formed after protoliths and constitutes southernmost exposure domain Apennines. By integrating fieldwork with microstructural studies, Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material thermodynamic modelling, we show MRC preserves a D1/M1 developed under HP–LT conditions (~1.0–1.1 GPa at T ~ 400°C) during non-coaxial, top-to-the-NE, crustal shortening regime. Evidence for metamorphism generally cryptic within MRC, dominated by graphite-bearing assemblages infrequent blastesis muscovite ± chlorite chloritoid paragonite parageneses, equilibrated cold palaeo-geothermal (~10°C/km). Results this allow extending signature subduction zone already documented Apennine orogen, providing further evidence syn-orogenic ductile exhumation HP units belt. Finally, discuss possible role fluid-mediated changes reactive bulk rock composition mineral progress regional deformation conditions.
