Allometric and Stoichiometric Traits Predict Nutrient Excretion Rates by Benthic Consumers

چکیده

Benthic consumers profoundly impact nutrient regeneration in coastal marine ecosystems. The concurrent imbalance and warming of our seas will change the nutritional requirements metabolic demands these consumers, which may affect their ability to recycle nitrogen phosphorous. Here we explore whether excretion rates two benthic Baltic clam ( Macoma balthica ) invasive spionid polychaete Marenzelleria spp.) can be quantified with basic biological traits across seasons using allometric stoichiometric relationships. We found species-specific N P that positively link traits, i.e., per individual increased body mass temperature; thus, high mass-specific characterized small relative large macrofaunal individuals. Interestingly, size scaling coefficients diverge from predictions by theory ecology (MTE) universal model excretion. Furthermore, stable isotope signatures (δ 13 C δ 15 N) explained a minor additional proportion variability among species. also varied strongly seasonally, highest recycling during summer months, when community NH 4 -N PO -P clearly exceeded net sediment efflux. seasonal pattern emphasized changes temperature food availability drove processes thus indicated effects could outweigh importance animal biomass. Our results highlight benefits quantifying contributions environments, predicting alteration function response environmental change.

Interspecific Comparisons and the Potential Importance of Nutrient Excretion by Benthic Fishes in a Large Reservoir

—Fishes can provide an important link between benthic and pelagic habitats by removing nutrients from sediments and excreting them into the water column. The relative importance of nutrients excreted by fishes to ecosystem productivity may vary among species and with abiotic conditions. I measured excretion rates of three benthic feeding fishes, gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum, smallmouth buff...

Allometric scaling and taxonomic variation in nutrient utilization traits and maximum growth rate of phytoplankton

Nutrient utilization traits can be used to link the ecophysiology of phytoplankton to population dynamic models and the structure of communities across environmental gradients. Here we analyze a comprehensive literature compilation of four traits: maximum nutrient uptake rate; the half-saturation constant for nutrient uptake; the minimum subsistence quota, measured for nitrate and phosphate; an...

Manure nutrient excretion by Jersey and Holstein cows.

The objective of this study was to evaluate feces, urine, and N excretion by Jersey and Holstein cows. Sixteen multiparous cows (n=8 per breed) were fed 2 experimental rations at calving in a switchback experimental design. Diets were 50% forage and based on corn meal (control) or whole cottonseed. Half the cows in each breed started on the control diet and half started on the whole cottonseed ...

Ecological stoichiometry in freshwater benthic systems: recent progress and perspectives

1. Ecological stoichiometry deals with the mass balance of multiple key elements [e.g. carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)] in ecological systems. This conceptual framework, largely developed in the pelagic zone of lakes, has been successfully applied to topics ranging from population dynamics to biogeochemical cycling. More recently, an explicit stoichiometric approach has also been used ...
