Allergic contact dermatitis to a dye or alcohol in a chlorhexidine-based skin preparation: A case report

This case report describes a patient who developed allergic contact dermatitis to chlorhexidine skin preparation applied for transversus abdominis plane block, but not different solution the surgical field. The had presented an elective inguinal hernia repair. He known history of anaphylaxis non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication was otherwise well. surgery completed uneventfully. Three or four days postoperatively, rash at site where been used prepare block. well-demarcated edges and exactly matched distribution previously preparation. No present site, which prepared with chlorhexidine-containing solution. gradually resolved over several weeks application topical corticosteroids. completely well no evidence infection any other systemic illness. preparations differed in dyes alcohols that they contained. alcohol block were therefore considered likely cause this patient’s reaction. Dyes should be as allergy perioperative setting.
