The soil environment contains a large, but historically underexplored, reservoir of biodiversity. Sequencing prokaryotic marker genes has become commonplace for the discovery and characterization bacteria archaea. Increasingly, this approach is also applied to eukaryotic characterize diversity distribution eukaryotes.
