چکیده
Rapid and reliable antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) platform is highly desired to select the right antibiotics treat infectious disease at early stage. Here, we demonstrate rapid ASTs using nanoscale silicon ion-selective field-effect transistor sensors. Our sensors profile bacterial metabolic kinetics by monitoring metabolism induced acidification in growth media with absence presence of different antibiotics. AST results could be determined from profiles a total assay time less than 30 min for strains. In addition, also distinguish bactericidal mechanisms modes actions. Furthermore, initial concentration an unknown sample, key parameter determine its clinic relevance, estimated based on profiles. demonstrated method all-electrical, label-free technology compatible, holds great promise development high-throughput low-cost point-of-care device.

Antibiotic susceptibility testing in less than 30 min using direct single-cell imaging.
The emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria are aggravated by incorrect prescription and use of antibiotics. A core problem is that there is no sufficiently fast diagnostic test to guide correct antibiotic prescription at the point of care. Here, we investigate if it is possible to develop a point-of-care susceptibility test for urinary tract infection, a disease that 100 million ...

Silicon transistors have undergone rapid miniaturization in the past several decades. Recently reported CMOS devices have dimensional scales approaching the “nano-transistor” regime. This paper discusses performance characteristics of a MOSFET device with 15 nm physical gate length. In addition, aspects of a non-planar CMOS technology that bridges the gap between traditional CMOS and the nano-t...

12.2 TERMINOLOGY Selectivity All Clinically effective antimicrobial agents exhibit selective toxicity towards the bacterium rather than the host. It is this characteristic that distinguishes antibiotics from disinfectants. The basis for selectivity will vary depending on the particular antibiotic. When selectivity is high the antibiotics are normally non toxic. However, even highly selective an...

T he concept of attacking invading microorganisms without harming the host was first introduced by Paul Ehrlich. In 1910 he discovered ‘‘salvarsan’’, which he announced as a magic bullet for the treatment of syphilis. Penicillin, produced by the fungus, Penicillium notatum, was first discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, purified by Florey and Chain in 1940, and shown to have wide applicabil...

The impact of dopant atoms in transistor functionality has significantly changed over the past few decades. In downscaled transistors, discrete dopants with uncontrolled positions and number induce fluctuations in device operation. On the other hand, by gaining access to tunneling through individual dopants, a new type of devices is developed: dopant-atom-based transistors. So far, most studies...
