Algae blooms on the Greenland Ice Sheet detected through solar-induced fluorescence

Glacial algae blooms on the Greenland ice sheet darken surface albedo, enhancing melt. Sentinel-3 data was first to highlight extent of these blooms, which are expected become larger as climate changes. Here we propose a novel use solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from TROPOMI confirm Sentinel-based maps and extend daily levels understand year-to-year variations in blooms. We combine SIF with random walker algorithm identify algae-covered areas. The SIF-based found be highly correlated ones. timing bloom consistent between 2018 2020. This work opens door new, complementary method for monitoring sheets improving our understanding their impact glacier melt rate.
