Airline Disruption Management: A Naturalistic Decision-Making Perspective in an Operational Control Centre

چکیده
Operations Control Centres (OCCs) are critical structures used by airlines to oversee the execution of all planned flights, managing punctuality, regularity and customer support. In this study, we investigated decision-making during flight disruptions inside an OCC from naturalistic perspective. We conducted a mini-ethnography case study in major South American airline, focussing on how functions disruption management cope with variability. Data collection included document analyses, field notes, direct observations interviews. The functional description work-as-done revealed constantly actively looks for signs while monitoring normal operation rebalancing resources. process is distributed decentralised across multiple functions, where experts each function rely repertoire strategies deploy innovative solutions dynamic scenarios. Five different mechanisms were identified that converge disarm potential before they compromise network, continuously create reinforce system buffers.

The Naturalistic Decision Making Perspective
The naturalistic decision making (NDM) approach seeks to understand human cognitive performance by studying how individuals and teams actually make decisions in real-world settings. Three major criteria have appeared in the literature to describe research that counts as NDM study: The research focuses on expertise, it takes place in field settings, and it reflects the conditions (such as uncert...

Operations control is one of the most important areas for an airline company. Through operations control mechanisms an airline company monitors all the flights checking if they follow the schedule that was previously defined by other areas of the company. Unfortunately, some problems may arise during this stage (Clausen et al., 2005). Those problems can be related with crewmembers, aircrafts an...
متن کاملReal-time decision support for airline schedule disruption management
This study applied a method of inequality-based multiobjective genetic algorithm (MMGA) for real-time airline schedule disruption management in response to the schedule disruption of short-haul, quick turnaround flights with an environmental consideration. Empirical study based on a real-world airline flight schedule demonstrated that the proposed model can recover a disrupted schedule within a...

OBJECTIVE This article describes the origins and contributions of the naturalistic decision making (NDM) research approach. BACKGROUND NDM research emerged in the 1980s to study how people make decisions in real-world settings. METHOD The findings and methods used by NDM researchers are presented along with their implications. RESULTS The NDM framework emphasizes the role of experience in...
متن کاملMaking Naturalistic Decision Making “Fast and Frugal”
The Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) addresses how human decision makers can deal with constraints of time and information. In general, NDM theories are consistent with expert decision making but tend to be very general, referring to broad categories of cognitive processes such as recognition, pattern matching, and mental simulation, without explaining exactly how these processes are performe...
