Ahmad Qābel, Religious Secularity and Velāyat-e Faqih in Iran

Religious secularity and Islam have not often been considered in the West as comfortable bedfellows, yet Islamic revolution Iran 1979 questioned assumptions about appropriateness of separate spheres for religion politics. However, within a decade revolution, theoretical intellectual shifts were visible Iranian seminaries, alternative views doctrine velāyat-e faqih (guardianship jurists) which twinned politics together, being discussed. Such transformed from one had divine mandate to that practice emanated people. This article focuses upon ideas mid-ranking reformist seminarian, Ahmad Qābel (d. 2012), whose tight adherence reason resulted him ultimately rejecting faqih, calling form religious seminary remained divorced state structures institutions. For Qābel, this did mean creation an irreligious society, but establishment more open pluralist one, differences could be voiced.
