The results of our comparative analysis parameters the leukocyte blood system underyearlings and mature specimens common viper Vipera berus are presented. material was 36 females 26 males caught in Middle Volga basin, 13 born captivity from 4 this sample. V. b. differed: by a lower content heterophils azurophils, an increased eosinophils basophils, increase shift index, decrease lymphocytic–granulocytic index heterophil–eosinophil ratio, lymphocyte–eosinophil ratio; reduced heterophils, ratio. In general, adaptive response indicated later activation lymphocytes as effector link imbalance immune due to lack resource immunocompetent cells (agranulocytes) compared with indices adults natural populations.

The role of the vomeronasal organ of crotalines (Reptilia: Serpentes: Viperidae) in predator detection.

Most reptiles and mammals, with the exceptions of crocodilians, aquatic mammals and some primates, have a functional vomeronasal organ that detects and perceives semi-volatile chemicals in the environment. This organ is used in detection of prey and is also important for recognition of conspecifics and potential predators. We tested eight species of North American pit vipers for behavioural res...

Immunological Cross-Reactivity and Neutralisation of European Viper Venoms with the Monospecific Vipera berus Antivenom ViperaTAb

Medically important cases of snakebite in Europe are predominately caused by European vipers of the genus Vipera. The mainstay of snakebite therapy is polyclonal antibody therapy, referred to as antivenom. Here we investigate the capability of the monospecific V. berus antivenom, ViperaTAb®, to cross-react with, and neutralise lethality induced by, a variety of European vipers. Using ELISA and ...

Proteome and Peptidome of Vipera berus berus Venom.

Snake venom is a rich source of peptides and proteins with a wide range of actions. Many of the venom components are currently being tested for their usefulness in the treatment of many diseases ranging from neurological and cardiovascular to cancer. It is also important to constantly search for new proteins and peptides with properties not yet described. The venom of Vipera berus berus has hem...

Cloacoscopy in the Horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes)

This study illustrates the main morphological structures of the cloaca of six adult horned vipers Vipera ammodytes (3.3). The coprodeum is characterized by smooth and thin mucosa, with moderate vasculature. In the centre of the coprodeum the anal sphincter is located, which separates the coprodeum from the colon. Structures of the urodeum are divided by two highly developed septa in female vipe...
