Age and Social History Impact Social Interactions between Bull Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus) at Denver Zoo

چکیده

Wild bull Asian elephants spend time in all-male groups. Therefore, managers of ex situ populations increasingly house bulls together. We examined the social interactions five at Denver Zoo, using instantaneous sampling to compare across adolescent and mature bulls, with a history prior integration this group compared no history. Both age significantly affected behavior. Adolescent exhibited more affiliative submissive behaviors when housed mixed-age partners only adolescents, less non-contact agonistic behavior proximity conspecific groups other adolescents. Mature they were increased contact least one bulls. Bulls new engaged affiliative, agonistic, behaviors, spent proximity, than previously established combinations. As institutions socially, our results provide insights into factors that may affect interactions.

Summation by Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus)

Recent empirical evidence for complex cognition in elephants suggests that greater attention to comparative studies between non-human primates and other animals is warranted. We have previously shown that elephants possess the ability to judge the difference between two discrete quantities, and unlike other animals, their choice does not appear to be affected by distance or overall quantity. In...

Social life of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Southern India: implications for elephant welfare.

Asian elephants in the wild live in complex social societies; in captivity, however, management often occurs in solitary conditions, especially at the temples and private places of India. To investigate the effect of social isolation, this study assessed the social group sizes and the presence of stereotypies among 140 captive Asian elephants managed in 3 captive systems (private, temple, and f...

Studies on feed digestibilities in captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

In order to test the suitability of the horse as a nutritional model for elephants, digestibility studies were performed with six captive Asian elephants on six different dietary regimes, using the double marker method with acid detergent lignin as an internal and chromium oxide as an external digestibility marker. Elephants resembled horses in the way dietary supplements and dietary crude fibr...

Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) reassure others in distress

Contact directed by uninvolved bystanders toward others in distress, often termed consolation, is uncommon in the animal kingdom, thus far only demonstrated in the great apes, canines, and corvids. Whereas the typical agonistic context of such contact is relatively rare within natural elephant families, other causes of distress may trigger similar, other-regarding responses. In a study carried ...

Luteogenesis during the estrous cycle in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

The occurrence of multiple corpora lutea (CLs) in the ovaries of the cycling and pregnant elephant, a monovulatory mammal, has driven scientific discussions during the past five decades. However, fundamental knowledge on luteogenesis is lacking. In this long-term study, CL formation and regression throughout the estrous cycle were monitored using transrectal 2D- and 3D ultrasonography in 33 cap...
