Aeolus L2A aerosol optical properties product: standard correct algorithm and Mie correct algorithm

Abstract. Aeolus carries the Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument (ALADIN), first high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) in space. Although ALADIN is optimized to measure winds, its two measurement channels can also be used derive optical properties of atmospheric particles, including a direct retrieval ratio. This paper presents standard correct algorithm and Mie algorithm, main algorithms product called Level-2A product, as they are implemented version 3.12 processor, corresponding data labelled Baseline 12. The theoretical basis same Flamant et al. (2008). Here, we show in-orbit performance these algorithms. We explain adaptation calibration method, which needed cope with unforeseen variations instrument radiometric due strain primary mirror under varying thermal conditions. Then discuss limitations future improvements. demonstrate that L2A provides valuable information about airborne particles; particular, capacity retrieve useful ratio from observations. illustrated using Saharan dust aerosol observed June 2020.
