Adversity-hope hypothesis: Air pollution raises lottery demand in China

چکیده
Abstract The empirical literature points to a stylized phenomenon of increased demand for hope following adversity. Clotfelter and Cook (1989) suggest that is key sentiment underpinning recreational gambling. Chew Ho (1994, this journal) offer the view being experienced in lottery products when people enjoy delaying resolution uncertainty. Taking air quality as an indicator subjective well-being, we hypothesize positive causal relationship between pollution sales. We test hypothesis using data from China find measured by particle concentration increases popular which province-level daily sales records exist. can readily be seen on combining high-frequency, spatially resolved data. Our findings support adversity-hope context point further tests other measures adversity proxies hope.

متن کاملAir pollution and chronic cough in China.
We are grateful for the thoughtful commentary by Dr Medford relating to our recent article in CHEST . 1 We agree that because procedural risk in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is high, pretest suspicion for a more ominous diagnosis is warranted prior to invasive studies of associated mediastinal lymphadenopathy (MLAD). Specifi cally, exclusion of malignancy (lym...
متن کاملHealth damages from air pollution in China
This study evaluates air pollution-related health impacts on the Chinese economy by using an expanded version of the Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis model. We estimated that marginal welfare impact to the Chinese economy of ozone and particulate-matter concentrations above background levels increased from 1997 US$22 billion in 1975 to 1997 US$112 billion in 2005, despite improvements i...
متن کاملParticulate air pollution in Lanzhou China.
Concentrations of total suspended particles (TSP) and PM(10) in Lanzhou China have been kept high for the past two decades. Data collected during the intensive observational period from October 1999 to April 2001 show high TSP and PM(10) concentrations. Starting from November, the PM(10) pollution intensifies, and reaches mid to high alert level of air pollution, continues until April next year...
متن کاملAssociation of particulate air pollution with daily mortality: the China Air Pollution and Health Effects Study.
China is one of the few countries with some of the highest particulate matter levels in the world. However, only a small number of particulate matter health studies have been conducted in China. The study objective was to examine the association of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm (PM(10)) with daily mortality in 16 Chinese cities between 1996 and 2008. Two-sta...
