Advancing procedural justice in conservation

Just participation in conservation decision-making is a moral imperative and critical to achieving social ecological goals. However, understanding of what constitutes just process remains limited. Integrating key literature from environmental justice, psychology participatory conservation, we identify 11 procedural justice criteria, many which have been overlooked literature. We develop framework help promote organizes the criteria into three domains (Process properties, Agency participants, Interpersonal treatment), are underpinned by dimension recognition. highlight seven policy levers that can be used enhance (e.g., scalar contextual fit, conflict resolution, facilitation). advancing using this requires addressing number challenges, particular those related broader structural power inequalities, elucidating accounting for plural situated conceptions justice. outline pathways overcome these including promoting knowledge coproduction self-reflexivity.
