Adiantum shastense, a new species of maidenhair fern from California
A new species of Adiantum is described from California. This species is endemic to northern California and is currently known only from Shasta County. We describe its discovery after first being collected over a century ago and distinguish it from Adiantumjordanii and Adiantumcapillus-veneris. It is evergreen and is sometimes, but not always, associated with limestone. The range of Adiantumshas...
متن کاملAdiantum capillus-veneris Linn. (Maidenhair fern) in modern phytotherapy
Background and objectives: Maidenhair fern is an herbal medicine belonging to the family Pteridaceae which is extensively found in Atlantic coast as far as Ireland, America and Iran. The fronds of Adiantum capillus-veneris are prescribed for treatment of different diseases. Different phytochemical compositions such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, etc...
متن کاملSporangium Exposure and Spore Release in the Peruvian Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum peruvianum, Pteridaceae)
We investigated the different processes involved in spore liberation in the polypod fern Adiantum peruvianum (Pteridaceae). Sporangia are being produced on the undersides of so-called false indusia, which are situated at the abaxial surface of the pinnule margins, and become exposed by a desiccation-induced movement of these pinnule flaps. The complex folding kinematics and functional morpholog...
متن کاملFern constituents: triterpenoids from Adiantum capillus-veneris.
Two new migrated hopane triterpenoids, viz. 4alpha-hydroxyfilican-3-one and fern-9(11)-en-12beta-ol, and olean-18-en-3-one and olean-12-en-3-one as the first example of oleanane compounds from Adiantum ferns were isolated along with many other known triterpenoids from Adiantum capillus-veneris of China and Egypt. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses.
