Adaptive approaches to REDD+ are needed for countries with high forest cover and low deforestation rates

چکیده
Abstract Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) aims to maintain carbon stocks above benchmark reference levels through financial compensation. However, countries with high cover low (HFLD) are unlikely be compensated fairly if REDD+ initiatives fail conserve existing forests incentivize rates. Here we analyze the submissions of (FRLs) five HFLD [Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), (Congo), Guyana, Papua New Guinea, Suriname] platform United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. We assessed FRLs likely yield compensation payments that business-as-usual scenario compared quantitative emission data. Our results show only Guyana submitted an FRL yielded sufficient monetary incentives for Compensation will insufficient in Suriname, Congo. The DRC would generate highest payment (on average US$ 1.3 billion annually). Overall, our suggest provide adequate most countries. should allow post hoc adaptation changes drivers deforestation. This implies schemes need flexibility reflect opportunity costs alternative land uses, which is particularly acute where pressure can accumulate rapidly. More adaptive better rewards ways preserve their valuable ecosystems.

Major Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries and Redd+
Identifying major drivers of deforestation and forest degradation has been an important task at the present context of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation “REDD+”. At present, many bilateral and multilateral projects are carrying out pilot activities for the REDD+ in developing countries and many Asian countries are being engaged in this process. Asian countries namely ...

Interaction effects between economic development and forest cover determine deforestation rates
Recent work on global patterns of deforestation has shown that countries with high per capita GDP or low remaining forest cover are more likely to be experiencing afforestation than deforestation. Here, I show that the relationship is more complex than previously described, because the effect of one variable is dependent upon the value of the other. As a result, high-income nations exhibit the ...
متن کاملCurrent remote sensing approaches to monitoring forest degradation in support of countries measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems for REDD+
Forest degradation is a global phenomenon and while being an important indicator and precursor to further forest loss, carbon emissions due to degradation should also be accounted for in national reporting within the frame of UN REDD+. At regional to country scales, methods have been progressively developed to detect and map forest degradation, with these based on multi-resolution optical, synt...

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a climate change mitigation strategy employed to reduce the intensity of deforestation and GHGS emissions. In recent decades, drastic land use changes in Mazandaran province caused a substantial reduction in the amount of Hyrcanian forests. The present research based on objectives of REDD projects paid to identify of fore...
