Acoustic characteristics of a potentially important macroalgae, Sargassum horneri, for coastal fisheries

چکیده

• Vesicles of Sargassum horneri tended to increase with increasing algal body weight. Contribution rate vesicles S. acoustic reflection was high. Target strength (TS) bodies increased Weight-dependent TS followed this equation: w = 11.1 log 10 W -71.1. Biomass can be estimated by measurements. A species macroalgae, , which has gas-filled vesicles, plays important roles as nursery grounds, feeding and hiding grounds for coastal fauna. In addition, it recently emerged a new fishery resource in Japan. However, its intensity is unknown, resulting the impossibility quantitatively estimating biomass via an survey quantitative echosounder. We measured target (dB re 1 m 2 ) clarified characteristics. The measurements were taken using 120 kHz echosounder fishing port Iwate Prefecture June July 2014. Seven samples collected scuba diving waters surrounding port. Each individual sample divided every 30 cm, each layer suspended at depth about 4–5 m, measured. Then, we into other parts. part exsiccated 80 °C over h. dry weights vesicle then weight ( Weight -71.1, R 0.81) considered that contribution gas high, similar swim bladder fish, strong what been reported bladder, owing accompanying Thus, could revealed our study.

A novel antivirally active fucan sulfate derived from an edible brown alga, Sargassum horneri.

A novel fucan sulfate (Hor-1) was isolated from the hot water extract of an edible brown alga, Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh. The fucan sulfate was revealed to have sugar linkage types, sulfate content and uronic acid content different from those of sodium hornan (Na-HOR), another fucan sulfate isolated from this alga. However, it exhibited inhibitory activity against replication of herp...

Marine and Coastal Fisheries

Pop-up satellite archival tags (n = 31) were deployed on Yellowfin Tuna Thunnus albacares in the Gulf of Mexico for periods ranging from 14 to 95 d. Differences in diel vertical behavior were assessed by comparing time spent at temperature relative to the surface temperature ( T). Pooled samples revealed that 31% of darkness hours, 20% of twilight hours, and 12% of daylight hours were spent in ...

Marine and Coastal Fisheries

—The ability of fish to submerge after discarding is often used as a proxy for survival, but this practice underestimates total discard mortality because delayed mortality is overlooked. Fishery managers need a way to link ‘‘sink or swim’’ indicators, or variables observed during capture and release, with delayed mortality rates. We conducted a cage study of red snapper Lutjanus campechanus off...

Structural Features and Potent Antidepressant Effects of Total Sterols and β-sitosterol Extracted from Sargassum horneri

The purified total sterols and β-sitosterol extracted from Sargassum horneri were evaluated for their antidepressant-like activity using the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) in mice. Total sterols and β-sitosterol significantly reduced the immobility time in the FST and TST. Total sterols were administered orally for 7 days at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, and β-sitoster...

Isolation of a novel alginate lyase‐producing Bacillus litoralis strain and its potential to ferment Sargassum horneri for biofertilizer

Algae have long been used to augment plant productivity through their beneficial effects. Alginate oligosaccharide is believed to be one of the important components to enhance growth and crop yield. In this study, we isolated and characterized a Bacillus litoralis strain, named Bacillus M3, from decayed kelps. We further demonstrated that the M3 strain could secrete alginate lyase to degrade al...
