Acid mine drainage (AMD) contamination in coal mines and the need for extensive prediction and remediation: a review

چکیده

Globally, the major source of environmental pollution as a result mineral exploitation and processing is acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD refers to outflowing streams acidic constituents from pyrite-bearing ore mines. The exposure pyrite (FeS2) in coal waste dumps atmospheric oxygen water presence microbial communities promotes formation sulphuric which leaches out inherent heavy metals into discharge, phenomenon called oxidation. AMDs are usually characterized by convoy toxic metals, most transition elements (copper, nickel, zinc, etc.) arsenic at concentrations higher than limits permitted regulations. impact this discharge mines on downstream/underground waters farm lands within corresponding mining zones have been severally reported previous researchers, but not so much discussed extensive prediction remediation. It view that current paper reviews need for remediation approach under following subheadings; General introduction, sources identification, representative sampling, adoption model, determination potential quality via static kinetic tests development an economically sustainable strategy. thought article would be useful academia well policy makers responsible implementation regulations

Acid Mine drAinAge (AMd) MAnAgeMent

AMd is recognized as one of the most serious environmental problem in the mining industry. the problem of acid mine drainage (AMd) has been present since mining activity began thousands of years ago. Mining activity has disrupted the hydrology of mining areas so badly that it is extremely difficult to predict where water would eventually re-emerge. its causes, treatment have become the focus of...

Bio-Remediation of Acid Mine Drainage in the Sarcheshmeh Porphyry Copper Mine by Fungi: Batch and Fixed Bed Process

Acid mine drainage (AMD) containing high concentrations of iron and sulphate, low pH and variableconcentrations of heavy metals leads to many environmental problems. The concentrations of Cu and Mnare high in the AMD of the Sarcheshmeh porphyry copper mine, Kerman province, south of Iran. In thisstudy, the bio-remediation of Cu and Mn ions from acid mine drainage was investigated using two nati...

Heavy Metals from Acid Mine Drainage in Coal Mines-A Case Study

Acid drainage is most common problem or associated with almost all mines containing sulphide deposits and coal containing high pyrite. Acid drainage is caused when rain water and or seepage from rock formation interact with sulphur bearing minerals. It produces water of high acidity with higher metal concentration. Acid drainage is most susceptible to dissolve heavy metals particularly Iron, Zi...

Acid mine drainage and subsidence: effects of increased coal utilization.

The increases above 1975 levels for acid mine drainage and subsidence for the years 1985 and 2000 based on projections of current mining trends and the National Energy Plan are presented. No increases are projected for acid mine drainage from surface mines or waste since enforcement under present laws should control this problem. The increase in acid mine drainage from underground mines is proj...
