Some fallout radionuclides in deep waters around Japan.
Deep water samples collected in 1963 and 1964 in the adjacent seas of Japan were analyzed radiochemically. Sr-90 and Cs-137 were detected in the deep layers down to 6,000 meters deep and showed approximately uniform vertical distributions below 1,000 meters. Mean concentrations of Sr-90 in deep waters were 0.028 ƒÊƒÊc/l in the Pacific and 0.035ƒÊƒÊc /l in the northern Japan Sea, and those of Cs...
متن کاملInfluence of Posidonia Oceanica on the Distribution of Natural and Anthropogenic Radionuclides in Coastal Sediments of the Northwest Mediterranean Sea
Samples were collected adjacent to the Island of Porquerolles in the Northwest Mediterranean Sea to study the distribution of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in heavily oxygen-depleted sediments associated with the decomposition of organic carbon derived from the sea grass Posidonia oceanica. Elevated isotopic concentrations of uranium ( U and U up to 200 Bq/kg d.w.) were likely due to ...

Accumulation of radionuclides from radioactive substrata by some micromycetes.
Overgrowing (interaction) and dissolution of intact and milled hot particles by various micromycetes were studied under laboratory conditions. Hot particles used for the investigation originated from the Chernobyl accident release and atomic bomb testing sites. The micromycetes investigated were mitosporic fungi mainly isolated from the Chernobyl site and vicinity. Most of the fungal species an...
متن کاملRapid Sediment Accumulation Results in High Methane Effluxes from Coastal Sediments
Globally, the methane (CH4) efflux from the ocean to the atmosphere is small, despite high rates of CH4 production in continental shelf and slope environments. This low efflux results from the biological removal of CH4 through anaerobic oxidation with sulfate in marine sediments. In some settings, however, pore water CH4 is found throughout the sulfate-bearing zone, indicating an apparently ine...
