Accelerating electric vehicle adoption: techno-economic assessment to modify existing fuel stations with fast charging infrastructure

Abstract With the increasing electric vehicle (EV) penetration, there arises an immediate need for charging infrastructure. In future, electrification of transportation will reduce requirement existing fuel stations, thereby rendering them obsolete. However, they are best suited to cater demand EVs as drivers accustomed locations and incremental cost providing this service be lower. paper, we propose a novel methodology assess techno-economic feasibility retrofitting station with EV infrastructure also known Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). To further enhance value proposition, potential integrating Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) infrastructure, which results in reduction grid connection costs, is studied. The sustainability proposed system improved additional onsite Photovoltaic (PV) generation. implemented UK case study. configurations study designed based on technical considerations involved typical fast facility EVs. From results, it observed that 4 EVSE, 1 BESS, 8 h operation configuration PV economically viable. abovementioned most feasible terms Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate Return (IRR) Discounted Payback Period (DPP) amongst other considered indicates though dominant factor affecting feasibility, use BESS or without can by almost 90% depending capacity BESS. acts decision support tool select techno-economically PV.
