Ablation behaviour of carbon fibre ultra-high temperature composites at oblique angles of attack

چکیده

Oxyacetylene torch testing was performed at a range of angles attack on Cf/ZrB2-SiC-Y2O3 composites, from 10° to 90°. The ablation behaviour studied in-situ with thermography, and the post-ablation morphologies investigated optically elemental analysis. Significantly lower surface temperatures were observed oblique leading less damage in terms both oxidation extent material removal. Rudimentary modelling gas stream impinging perfect showed that angular variation also led significant drop pressure more attack, commensurate increase shear stress. oxide formed during seemed mainly correspond temperature distribution apparently susceptible higher than This study elucidated some interesting aspects modified test new parameter ranges which may be useful targeted screening.

Influence of fibre-matrix interface on the fracture behaviour of carbon-carbon composites

This paper studies the fracture behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced carbon matrix composites and its relation with the type of fibre-matrix interface developed in the composite. Model unidirectional carbon-carbon composites were prepared using the same type of fibre and different pitches as matrix precursors. These included both commercial pitches and synthesized in the laborato...

High Temperature Oxidation Behaviour of Nimonic - 115 Alloy in Presence of Sodium Salts at 850OC

The high temperature oxidation behaviour of Nimonic-115 industrial alloy has been investigated in presence of  NaNO3, Na2CO3 and Na2O2 at 850oC in flowing air. The oxidation kinetics and effect of salt deposition for the period of 48 h were studied. The scale morphologies were determined on the basis of X-ray diffraction anal...

Image Characterization of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites

A new methodology to detect fibres orientation in composite materials, using image processing tools is introduced. Several examples with manufacturing defects are studied using RIMAPS technique and the Variogram method. The characterization is made from digitized images of the samples. Combined use of RIMAPS and Variogram analyses identified the orientation of fibres and determined the values o...

Effect of SiC Content on the Ablation and Oxidation Behavior of ZrB2-Based Ultra High Temperature Ceramic Composites

The ablation and oxidation of ZrB₂-based ultra high temperature ceramic (UHTC) composites containing 10%, 15% and 30% v/v SiC were tested under different heat fluxes in a high frequency plasma wind tunnel. Performance was significantly affected by the surface temperature, which was strongly dependent on the composition. Composites containing 10% SiC showed the highest surface temperature (>2300...

Behaviour of Ti-doped 3D Carbon Fibre Composites under Intense Thermal Shock Tests

This paper reports on the development of novel Ti-doped 3D carbon fibre composites (CFCs) and their performance when exposed to transient thermal loads (disruptions) in the electron beam facility JUDITH at different conditions. Depending on the applied load, the CFCs showed three steps of erosion: 1) breaking of PAN fibres with pull out from the surface; 2) cracking and ablation of pitch fibres...
