Local Interstellar Matter: The Apex Cloud
Several nearby individual low column density interstellar cloudlets have been identified previously based on kinematical features evident in high-resolution Ca observations near the Sun. One of these cloudlets, the ‘Apex Cloud” (AC), is within 5 pc of the Sun in the solar apex direction. The question of which interstellar cloud will constitute the next galactic environment of the Sun in princip...
متن کاملEnergy dissipation in interstellar cloud collisions
We present a study of the kinetic energy dissipation in interstellar cloud collisions. The main aim is to understand the dependence of the elasticity (defined as the ratio of the final to the initial kinetic energy of the clouds) on the velocity and mass ratio of the colliding clouds, magnetic field strength, and gas metallicity for head-on collisions. The problem has been studied both analytic...

متن کاملA Dynamical Study of the Non-Star-forming Translucent Molecular Cloud MBM 16: Evidence for Shear-driven Turbulence in the Interstellar Medium
We present the results of a velocity correlation study of the high latitude cloud MBM16 using a fully sampled CO map, supplemented by new CO data. We find a correlation length of 0.4 pc. This is similar in size to the formaldehyde clumps described in our previous study. We associate this correlated motion with coherent structures within the turbulent flow. Such structures are generated by free ...
متن کاملAn interstellar cloud with a possible low deuterium abundance
We present new observations of the binary Sirius A / Sirius B performed with HST-GHRS. Two interstellar clouds are detected on this sightline, one of them being identified as the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC), in agreement with previous HST-GHRS observations of Sirius A (Lallement et al. 1994). The interstellar structure of this sightline, which we assume is the same toward both stars (separat...
